Time Based Packing and Cartons
This example shows you how to setup TWO post-press activities that work together: Time Based Packing and Cartons.
These two Post-Press items work together in an Estimate to automatically calculate the number of cartons to use and how much time it takes to pack those cartons.
1. Time Based Packing
First you will need to setup the Time Based Packing Post-Press Activity based on the Paper Weight of the Quantity
1.1. General Tab
1.2. Variable Charges Tab
Set the popups at the top to the following values:
1. Set Calc Method = "Time Based Packing". This is a special calculation method that tells PrintPoint to use the Setup Time and Time for Each Additional rates to calculate the amount of time to do the carton packing.
2. Set Charge Basis = Paper Weight. This tells PrintPoint to use the weight of the Finished Pieces of the Estimate to pack into the cartons we select on the Estimate.
3. Set Based On = Quantity. This tells PrintPoint to base the calculation on the Quantity of Finished Pieces specified on the Estimate.
4. Set In Sets of = 1. This tells PrintPoint that the calculation is based on each Carton
5. Set Rate Basis = 1
6. Set Units = Cartons. This is used for display purposes on the entry form.
7. Set the Rate Per 1 Cartons chart up with the appropriate times you want to use for the calculations when using this Post-Press item in an Estimate. The Setup Time tells PrintPoint how much time it takes to set up the carton(s) and pack the first one. The Time for Each Additional tells how much time it takes to pack the carton(s).
8. Set the Custom Dialog / Questions popup to Single Question: Custom. This lets PrintPoint know that you have a question to answer in order to complete the calculation for the selected Bindery item.
9. Set the Custom Dialog Text = "How many lbs/carton?" This is the question that needs to be answered when using this Post-Press item on an Estimate. It lets PrintPoint know how much weight you will be packing into each carton.
10. Set the Formula to Apply = "Rate Count = Quantity / Answer".
1.3. Click OK to save the Post-Press record.
2. Cartons
Next you will need to set up one or more Carton records to be used for packing
2.1. General Tab
- Enter "Your Activity Name" into Activity Name. What you enter here is what will be displayed when you choose the Carton in the Time Based Packing selector on the Estimate. We suggest including the dimensions of the carton in the name for easier selection on the Estimate.
- The Job Description will be copied automatically from the entered Activity Name if there is no value yet. Adjust if necessary.
- Select the Category.
2.2. Variable Charges Tab
Set the popups at the top to the following values:
1. Set Calc Method = "Auto-Calc Boxes". This is a special calculation method that tells PrintPoint to automatically calculate the number of boxes/cartons to use in conjunction with a Time Based Packing Post-Press item in the same Estimate.
2. Set Charge Basis = Other. This tells PrintPoint that a special calculation is going to be performed.
3. Set Based On = Actions or Units. This tells PrintPoint to base the calculation on the special Units.
4. Set In Sets of = 1. This tells PrintPoint that the calculation is based on each Unit.
5. Set Rate Basis = 1
6. Set Units = Box. This is used for display purposes on the entry form.
7. Set the Rate Per 1 Box chart with the break levels and the amounts that you want to charge for each box at the 3 different Customer Rating Levels that PrintPoint uses. Don't forget to include the Waste % you expect at each level. As in other Post-Press items, if you will be charging a single price per box no matter how many are used, simply enter an impossibly high number like 1,000,000 for the upper range of the Box count on the left (From/To columns) and the price per box for the 3 rating levels.
8. Set the Maximum Lbs Per Box. This tells PrintPoint the maximum weight this Box can handle. This provides the ceiling when calculating the number of boxes needed from the Time Based Packing item. The Estimator can choose to enter less weight to be packed in each box for an Estimate, but the entered value will not be able to exceed the value entered here.
9. Set the Custom Dialog / Questions popup to Single Question: Custom. This lets PrintPoint know that you have a question to answer in order to complete the calculation for the selected Bindery item.
10. Set the Custom Dialog Text = "How many boxes?" In this special Post-Press item, this only acts as a label next to the calculated number of boxes.
11. Set the Formula to Apply = "Total = Answer * Rate [For Each Qty in Estimate]". This special Post-Press item will display 1 row for each of the Estimate Quantities (A/B/C) that have a value. The answer for each Quantity is automatically calculated based on the weight of the paper (Finished Pieces) in the Estimate and how much weight the Time Based Packing Post-Press item says will be packed into each box.
2.3. Click OK to save the Post-Press record.
3. Using Time Based Packing and Cartons in an Estimate
3.1. Set up the Time Based Packing Post-Press Item
On the Estimate, click on one of the Post-Press Item checkboxes and set the Post-Press Selector dialog up by:
1. Choose the Packing category from the Category Selector at the top. Note that this name may be different in your data.
2. Choose the Time Based Packing item from the Activity Selector at the bottom.
3. Choose the Carton to be packed from the popup on the right. This popup is a list of all Post-Press items that have been set up as Auto-Calc Boxes as described in Section 2 above. The maximum weight of the carton is appended to the end of the item's name and will be automatically entered into the answer box next to the question. You can override the weight to be packed if you'd like. The value that appears in the answer is used to calculate the number of cartons actually needed.
4. Click OK to accept the selection.
On your Estimate, both the Time Based Packing item and the selected Carton will appear in the list of Post-Press Items.
3.2. Set up the Carton
The Carton selected in the Time Based Packing item is automatically added to your Estimate for you.
